“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”
Empathy can be a challenge for some people. Often we believe too much emotional influence from others risks a loss of self, or the influence of manipulation. However, cutting oneself off from emotional influence can lead to a loss of empathy. Empathy can be clearly defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Allow yourself to feel, or imagine how another person must feel, and share with that person in his/her experience. Empathy is important because it allows you to gain insight as to how to best interact with people in any situation. It also allows you to grow as a person, as you reflect upon how you respond in emotional situations with others; in any kind of relationship.
Personal Purpose Project:
Tomorrow morning, make a point to really listen to everyone during the day. See if you can spot moments of empathy that you provide to others, and that others provide to you. Write down at least two instances that occur during the day. What did you notice that clued you in to another person’s need for empathy? How did you provide that person with a non-judgmental support of their feelings and experience? When did it happen for you? How did the other person demonstrate empathy for you? Think of all the positive energy created by each experience!
